Dressing code of a Tamizhan
Old of about 5000 BC, an old living language, Tamil. IT language is one of the most beautiful languages in the world. Along with its language, Tamil has a very beautiful Dravidian dressing code. This dress code does not apply for religious ceremonies, but for every event. Along with its beauty, the Dravidian dress code has its significance and importance.
To show our humbleness towards our divine Deities, 2 to 5 metres of beautiful cloth is used for a Tamizhan to be dressed accordingly. Vesthi, for boys and men, for young girls, Paavaadai, and finally for women, Pudavai are the appropriate dress codes.
Dressing code is not only clothes worn but also some alangaaram with their importance is to be worn. Without those alangaaram our dress code is incomplete.
padtai - Sacred Ash. –Thiruneeru.
In worship connected with Sivaperumaan, wearing Thiruneeru is a symbol of purity. It contains positive energy and acts as a Kavasam (கவசம் – Kavasam- Armour). This energy protects our body from negative energies around us.
Normally, the Thiruneeru is picked up with three middle fingers of the right hand and applied such that three lines is form across the forehead (Pattai). This indicates the Trinity of Sivaperumaan in his manifestation as Brahman is the Creator of all life; Vishnu is the Protector and Rudran (Sivan) the Destroyer.
Pottu (பொட்டு) – (Sandanam- சந்தனம், Kungumam-குங்குமம்)
Sandanam Pottu and Kungumam Pottu represent the third eye and help to control the various levels of concentration. Along with this Sandanam and Kungumam Pottu add beauty to our appearance. Apart from Sandanam Pottu, There are 3 types of Kunguamam Pottu:
Karuppou Pottu (Black Pottu) – worn by young girls and sometimes by baby boys to protect them from evil eyes during their growth until they get married even then a black dot can be worn to be always protected by evil eyes.
Manjal Kungumam Pottu, Also known as Alangaaram Kungumam (dark red) – can be worn by everybody (man, girls and women). Mariammen devotees make use it more often.
Kalyaana Kungumam Pottu, Also known as Kungumam “Mauvre” (pink) – worn by married women only which represents honour, love and prosperity.
